French macarons are made from finely ground almond flour, egg whites and sugar. Macaron are sometimes mistaken with macaroon (an American dessert made with coconuts). French macaron is entirely different. It has a domed round shape with a ruffled base (often called feet). They are colorful, and have crispy but incredibly thin outer shells which give way to a soft melt-in-your-mouth inside that enhances the smooth ganache, jam or buttercream fillings.
